Australia was essentially Protestant until about 1960, only 50-60 years ago. About 25 percent of the population was Catholic. A reasonable proportion of Protestants and Catholics practised their religion at least from time to time. Protestantism has suffered a sharp decline. While it has taken longer to happen, Catholicism has followed down the same path. Now, no one would regard Australia as predominantly Christian. We need works of Christian charity and idealism and the open spreading of Christianity to reverse the tide.
A challenge to the Catholics of Australasia
The Mother of God Brothers
Some thoughts for reflection on the Catholic view of life:
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go,
To right the unrightable wrong,
To love pure and chaste from afar,
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star,
This is my quest, to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far,
To fight for the right, without question or pause,
To be willing to march into Hell
for a heavenly cause,
And I know if I'll only be true,
To this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm,
When I'm laid to my rest,
And the world will be better for this,
That one man scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove with his last ounce of courage,
To reach the unreachable star.
He was born in an obscure village . . .
he worked in a carpenter shop until he was thirty . . .
he then became an itinerant preacher.
He never held an office . . . he never had a family or owned a house . . .
he didn't go to college or high school or University . . .
he had no credentials but himself.
centuries and more have come and gone,
and today he is the central figure of the human race,
All the armies that ever marched,
all the navies that ever sailed,
all the parliaments that ever sat,
and all the kings that ever reigned
have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that . . .
One Solitary Life.
